 Our Pawsey Summer Internship Program is run over the Australian summer holidays. This program offers high achieving and promising undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to collaborate with leading researchers, using Pawsey’s world-class facilities.

This Program offers students a paid internship focused on building skills and experience in computational science and research projects.  During the Program, interns work alongside national and/or international supervisors and collaborators, gaining invaluable hands-on experience.

Throughout the program, interns will receive guidance from Pawsey staff on best practices for using Pawsey resources, creating and presenting videos and posters, scientific communication techniques, and the importance of diversity and inclusion.

The Internship program includes (virtual) induction trainings. Through these trainings, interns learn about supercomputing, data management and scientific visualization. With the support of Intern Mentors, interns will also form a Community of Practice with other interns across Australia.

 This year’s Pawsey Summer Internship Program will focus on research projects targeting:

  • A variety of Computational Domains / Fields
  • Machine Learning
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Code Optimisation
  • Data Management and Complex Workflows
  • Quantum Computing
  • Visualisation

Location: Various locations across Australia

Stipend: Up to AU$ 1,915.90 per fortnight

Duration: Placements are for 10 weeks between 25 November 2024 and 14 February 2025 (there will be a 2 week unpaid break at the end of December)

To be eligible to apply you must be an Australian or New Zealand Citizen, Australian Permanent Resident, Australian temporary resident or an international student who has full work rights for the 10 weeks duration (does not require visa sponsorship).

Applications are open to students who:

  • Undergraduate students who:
    • are currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree at an Australian university, and
    • have completed 3 years (full-time equivalent) of an undergraduate course; however, exceptional second-year students may be considered,
  • Graduate students (Masters by Research and PhD**) who are currently enrolled in a graduate degree at an Australian university.

** If you are a PhD candidate, you must ensure that you are eligible to apply for a PAID internship and are available FULL TIME to complete the internship.


  • All students must:
    • have a strong academic record (credit average or higher),
    • intend to pursue a research career in science or technology, or a career in a related discipline; and
    • be able to undertake a full-time placement for 10 weeks over the university summer vacation period.

Appointment to this role may be subject to conditions including provision of a national police check as well as other security/medical/character clearance requirements.

    • the reasons why the top 2 research project/s you have selected are of interest to you and how your skills/knowledge meet the project requirements; and
    • an outline of your longer-term career aspirations and how this program will help you achieve them.
    • NOTE: We try to match students with preferred projects; however, if you want to be considered for more than your 2 preferred projects, please indicate those in your Cover Letter.  
  2. upload a copy of your academic results in the ‘Cover Letter’ field;
  3. in the ‘Education’ section select your university from the Educational Institute list;
  4. In the ‘Job-Specific Information’ section select your two preferred research projects for Pawsey in order of preference; and your Grade Point Average (GPA) as per the University Admission Centre’s methodology.  If you have a WAM, please read the Methodology on this site and calculate a GPA using the formula provided.
