Your duties will include:

  • Drawing on professional expertise, knowledge of other disciplines and research experience and achievement to formulate, develop and complete an approved research program. 
  • Be responsible for research projects or elements of larger projects within and/or across Business Units. 
  • May lead and supervise staff to ensure experiments are established in accordance with the research design and are completed within the agreed timeframes and budget. 
  • Undertake feasibility studies, demonstrate a considerable degree of originality, creativity and innovation in solving problems and introduce new directions and approaches. 
  • Communicate research results to clients and the research community through oral and written reports and may prepare advice and documentation for patent applications. 
  • Work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed research team to carry out tasks in support of CSIRO’s research objectives. 
  • Adhere to the spirit and practice of CSIRO’s Values, Code of Conduct, Health, Safety and Environment procedures and policy, Diversity initiatives and Making Safety Personal goals.


Location: Marsfield, NSW, Black Mountain ACT, Clayton VIC, Saint Lucia, QLD

Salary:  AU$102,724 - AU$111,165 plus up to 15.4% superannuation

Tenure: Indefinite Full-Time

To be considered you will need:

  • A PhD in a relevant field such as software engineering or computer science. 

  • Demonstrated ability to undertake original, creative and innovative research by generating and pursuing novel ideas and solutions with publications in top tier software engineering or related venues.

  • Research experience in one or more of the following software engineering sub-fields: software architecture and quality, requirements engineering, software development process or empirical software engineering.

  • Research experience in one or more of the following fields: responsible technology, artificial intelligence, machine learning, data management, ethics, risk management, governance, or human-centered computing.

  • Demonstrated track record in high quality research with impactful outcomes.  

  • Demonstrated high level of oral and written communication skills with the ability to represent CSIRO research externally to both academia, government and industry.
