The opportunity

The role of Research Scientist staff is to conduct innovative research leading to scientific achievements that are aligned with CSIRO’s strategies. The Research Scientist may be engaged in scientific activity ranging from fundamental research to the investigation of specific industry or community problems. The Research Scientist will have the opportunity to build and maintain networks, play a lead role in securing project funds, provide scientific leadership and pursue new ideas and approaches that create new concepts.

 

As part of the Calibration and Imaging Research and Development team the Research Scientist will conduct innovative research leading to impactful scientific outcomes in the field of Radio Astronomy at the Australia Telescope National Facility (ATNF).

Your duties will include:

  • Contribute to the scientific outcomes of the ATNF, including upgrades to the Australia Telescope Compact Array and ASKAP Science Surveys.
  • Develop and maintain scientific software tools in C++, C, and Python.
  • Lead or contribute to research projects, collaborating across business units and disciplines.
  • Engage with the scientific community to anticipate future needs and foster collaboration.
  • Present research findings to scientific, policy, and general audiences through reports and presentations.
  • Work respectfully and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, upholding CSIRO values and safety standards.

 

Location: Marsfield NSW, Kensington WA

Salary: AU$131,113.00  - AU$153,639.00  plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

Essential

Under CSIRO policy only those who meet all essential criteria can be appointed.

  • A PhD in a relevant field such as Astronomy, Physics or relevant areas of Data and Computer Science.
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake original, creative and innovative research by generating and pursuing novel ideas and solutions to scientific research problems.
  • A demonstrated publication history of authorship on scientific papers in peer reviewed journals and/or reports, grant applications or inventorship on patent applications.
  • A demonstrated history in scientific software development.
  • Knowledge of C++ and object oriented software design and construction.

 

Desirable

  • Demonstrated history in the development, deployment and maintenance of large-scale high-performance-computing applications.
  • Demonstrated history in Astronomy research or engineering.
  • Experience in Interferometric Imaging and Calibration.
  • Experience with Python package development and deployment.
  • Experience with GPU application development.
