The Position

CSIRO Postdoctoral Fellows provide opportunities to scientists and engineers, who have completed their doctorate and have less than four years relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships will help launch their careers, provide experience that will enhance their career prospects, and facilitate the recruitment and development of potential leaders for CSIRO.

Applications are invited for a 2 year CSIRO Postdoctoral Fellowship in CSIRO’s Data61.   You as the successful candidate will apply machine learning techniques to textual documents. More specifically, you will perform named entity recognition in complex documents, in real-time, and to make inferences over aspects of the text.

This role is being offered under the STEM+ Business Fellowship Program which provides opportunities for early career researchers to build new skills and relationships with industry. The STEM+ program is an initiative of the Science and Industry Endowment Fund (

Location:       Marsfield NSW
Salary:           $80K - $91K plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Tenure:          2 year specified term (or part time equivalent)

To be successful you will need:

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as natural language processing, information retrieval or machine learning.
  • Proven ability to perform big data analytics on noisy data using state-of-the-art technologies.
  • Experience in developing tools by using state-of-the-art programming languages and software practices.

Owing to the terms of the fellowship, candidates must not have more than 4 years of relevant full time postdoctoral research experience.
