The opportunity

We have two exciting opportunities for Junior Technicians to join CSIRO's Technologies for Radio Astronomy program within Space and Astronomy (S&A). Based at our Marsfield site in Sydney, these roles offer hands-on training under the mentorship of senior technicians and engineers. You will support the development, production, and maintenance of advanced radio astronomy instrumentation and sub-systems, contributing to projects that extend beyond astronomy into fields like earth observation and satellite communications.

 

These roles involve occasional fieldwork at regional and interstate observatories for installation and commissioning activities. Ideal for recent school leavers or those in the early stages of a relevant diploma or certificate course, these positions are perfect for individuals passionate about electronics, engineering, and working with cutting-edge technology.

Your duties will include:

  • Contribute to a team responsible for the design and development of room temperature and cryogenically cooled, low noise radio astronomy receiver systems together with associated support electronics.
  • Undertake laboratory-based work using small hand tools, soldering equipment and test instruments.  
  • Undertake procurement of electronic equipment, electronic components, and other laboratory items.
  • Maintenance of laboratory facilities and inventory.
  • Travel to CSIRO observatories and other sites to assist with installation, commissioning, and maintenance of electronic systems.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues within a multi-disciplinary team, the S&A engineering program and across CSIRO, to reach objectives.

 

Location: Marsfield (Sydney), NSW

Salary: AU$53k per annum plus up to 15.4% superannuation

Essential

Under CSIRO policy only those who meet all essential criteria can be appointed.

  • Certificate of high school education.
  • A demonstrated interest in electronics and engineering.
  • A technical aptitude with a high attention to detail and a strong interest in how things work.
  • Have a willingness to learn and develop hands-on skills.
  • Must be willing to undertake both formal and on-the-job training.
  • Must be willing to travel to our regional and interstate sites for up to 2 weeks at a time.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work well in a team environment.

Desirable:

  • A background or hobby in electronics and/or other areas of engineering would be looked upon favourably.

  • A current NSW driver’s license would be advantageous.
