CSIRO Postdoctoral Fellowship in NLP and Knowledge Extraction for Agriculture Applications

Date: 24-Nov-2021

Location: Sydney, NSW, AU

Company: CSIRO

The Opportunity

  • Do you have a PhD (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as Natural Language Processing (NLP) or Information Retrieval (IR) or similar?
  • Translate current NLP research into tangible applications in the agriculture domain
  • Join CSIRO – Australia’s leading scientific research organisation!

CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.

This is an exciting opportunity for a CERC Postdoctoral Fellow to join the Language and Social Computing (LASC) team of Natural Language Processing (NLP) researchers and engineers.

This applied research position will focus on Natural Language Processing (NLP), Information Retrieval (IR) and Machine Learning (ML).  The role will help translate current NLP research in the LASC team into tangible applications in the agriculture domain, leading to economic and societal impact.

The successful candidate will be situated within the Language and Social Computing (LASC) team but will work closely with key stakeholders from CSIRO’s Agriculture and Food business unit.

In the context of developing next generation “AI for Science” productivity tools for CSIRO Agriculture and Food Scientists, the CERC Fellow will develop tools that operate on agriculture-related scientific and technical literature, and relevant web data (such as social media and news).

The successful candidate will focus on the delivery of solutions to the agricultural sector, aligned with the team’s strategic research in Information Extraction (IE) and in developing a knowledge discovery and text analytics platform.    The CERC Fellow will expand on the team’s current research portfolio and conduct research in the application of these methods to the agriculture domain.

Your duties will include:

  • Implementation of Natural Language Processing (NLP) machine learning solutions
  • Collaboration with project team members to deliver agriculture-related NLP tools.
  • Solution design based on machine learning solution experimentation
  • Development of prototypes

Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (full-time equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience.
  • High level written and oral communication skills with the ability to represent the research team effectively internally and externally, including the presentation of research outcomes at national and international conferences.
  • Hands on experience using deep-learning methods (such as BERT) on textual data.
  • Demonstrated experience in working with real-world data.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing software and prototypes.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary, regionally dispersed research team, with the motivation and discipline to carry out independent research.
