The Pawsey Supercomputing Centre situated in Perth, Western Australia is a national world-class supercomputing and high-volume data storage facility operating petascale compute and associated storage infrastructure. As lead agent for the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre, CSIRO employs Pawsey Supercomputing Centre staff.

Pawsey’s Platforms Team is responsible for maintaining the infrastructure to fulfil the computing needs of the Australian research community and to engage with that community to make best use of the infrastructure including services that are operated on that infrastructure.

The incumbent, as part of this highly skilled team of professional specialists and system administrators, will ensure that Pawsey’s long term storage and ancillary services, meets the relevant service expectations.

The Pawsey Supercomputing Centre operates one of the largest tape-based storage systems for research data collections in Australia. Operated by Versity ScoutAM software and Spectralogic T-Finity Tape Libraries (which are equipped with Enterprise tape drives and media), this collection also includes the largest publicly-accessible research data collection in Australia - MWA ASVO.

Your duties will include:

 

  • Provide systems support for operation of Pawsey infrastructure, including but not limited to tape storage, HSM and Archive systems, fast parallel filesystems and other data storage infrastructure including disk storage, object storage, cloud computing, supercomputers, high performance Linux clusters as well as underpinning support systems (such as Monitoring, LDAP and the Pawsey user management system).
  • Assist in the operation and maintenance of Pawsey’s tape libraries and other storage infrastructure.
  • As required - assist in the operation and maintenance of Pawsey’s ancillary services infrastructure.
  • Undertake problem solving for both new and existing systems and services and workflows.
  • Ensure effective responses to system support issues via request tracking.
  • Ensure effective documentation for systems support and operating procedures.

 

Location: Kensington, Perth WA

Salary: AU$93k - AU$105k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

Selection Criteria:

Under CSIRO policy only those who meet all selection criteria can be appointed.

  1. Tertiary or graduate qualification in Science, Computing or Engineering, or equivalent experience.

  2. Experience in the administration of Linux or Unix systems.

  3. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to use these skills to engage effectively with colleagues and clients.

  4. The ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team under the general guidance of senior technical staff.

  5. The ability and willingness to contribute novel ideas and approaches in support of providing computing services to researchers or clients.

Desirable Criteria:

  1. Experience managing, operating, and troubleshooting Archive and HSM systems, fibre-channel connected enterprise tape libraries and tape system management software including hands-on Enterprise tape library hardware skills.
