The Pawsey Supercomputing Centre (Pawsey) is an $80M investment by the Australian Government in the National Research Infrastructure program, to develop a supercomputing and data intensive science capability for general science but with a particular focus on support for radio astronomy and the Square Kilometre Array precursor telescopes as well as geosciences, minerals and resources research.

Pawsey provides services in the areas of supercomputing, data management and analysis, and visualisation. Led by the Head of Supercomputing, Pawsey’s Supercomputing Team is responsible for configuring the infrastructure to fulfil the needs of the Australian research community and to engage with that community to make best use of the infrastructure. This role, as part of this highly skilled team of professional specialists and system adminstrators, will ensure that Pawsey’s high performance computing resources and related services meet its service expectations. This senior role provides technical leadership, ensuring high availability and reliability of services.

Specifically you will:

  • Provide mentoring and co-ordination for the Supercomputing team.
  • Project manage system refreshes, including end-to-end participation in procurement and transition processes.
  • Facilitate effective integration across different components of the Pawsey infrastructure.
  • Provide systems support and technical leadership for operation of Pawsey supercomputing infrastructure, including Cray supercomputers, commodity linux clusters and high performance parallel filesystems.
  • Co-ordinate and manage maintenance on Pawsey supercomputing infrastructure, including liaising with key stakeholders regarding timing and scope of maintenance.
  • Undertake problem solving at a high level for systems and workflows, and ensure effective response to system support issues via request tracking.
  • Manage faults and maintenance interactions with vendors. Liaise with users and their communities/representatives regarding delivery of system services to meet their requirements.

Salary: $106k - $124k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

Job requirements:

  • Tertiary qualification in Science, Engineering, Computer Science or Information Technology or other relevant field, and a minimum 10 years’ experience in administration of UNIX/Linux systems.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, including the ability to identify and influence critical stakeholders to gain support for contentious, proposals/ideas.
  • Proven ability to investigate underlying issues of complex and ill-defined problems and develop appropriate responses by adapting/creating and testing alternative solutions.
  • Demonstrated success in managing large scale computer systems in a research or operational environment.
  • High-level skills in the use of C or C++ and scripting languages such as Perl or python, including source code management.
  • Strong understanding of key supercomputing technologies, including accelerator architectures, HPC interconnects, hierarchical storage, resource scheduling/policies, use and provision of web services, portals, cloud technologies, scripting, workflow tools and scientific workflow management is highly desirable.
  • Experience in providing services to research domains, including engaging with researchers to determine requirements is also desirable, as is experience in procurement of supercomputing infrastructure and leading groups of technical professionals.
