The opportunity
The Pawsey Supercomputing Research Centre in Perth, Western Australia, is a national petascale supercomputing and data storage facility, supported by funding from the Western Australian and Federal government. The Pawsey Supercomputing Research Centre is an unincorporated joint venture of the CSIRO, Curtin University, Murdoch University and the University of Western Australia (core members), and Edith Cowan University (associate founding member). Pawsey supports the computing needs of the Australian research community.
The Senior Network Engineer will play a key role in maintaining network infrastructure, including campus switching, wireless, VPN, and network-wide services, working closely with the CSIRO Network team to ensure smooth functionality. Pawsey seeks a self-motivated, analytical individual experienced in network design and implementation, who can work under pressure and manage competing priorities.
Your duties will include:
- Work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed team to carry out tasks in support of Pawsey objectives.
- Contribute positively to stimulate and promote a team approach and develop sound working relationships with service users and business owners.
- Liaise with clients to determine their needs and take personal responsibility for their satisfaction, correct problems promptly and in a constructive manner.
- Keep up-to-date with emerging IT and networking trends and standards via formal and informal training and research to ensure an appropriate technical direction for the organisation and adherence within the environment.
- Provide technical advice relating to networks and integrated technology services, standards and procedures to team members and management.
- Maintain and upgrade Ethernet networks and work with AARNet and CSIRO network teams.
- Contribute towards, and lead the growth, development and updates to network infrastructure services.
- Co-ordinate and produce technical specifications, architectural documentation, project/program proposals and maintain systems documentation as required.
- Develop/implement and manage ongoing reporting related to the Pawsey network environment.

Salary: AU$126,313 - AU$148,014 plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:
Essential:
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in IT or equivalent experience in an enterprise or large-scale research setting.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary, geographically dispersed team under general direction to support scientific research.
- Skilled in documenting network topologies and firewall rules.
- Experience with data center facilities, infrastructure installation, and cable management.
- Hands-on expertise in deploying, configuring, and managing enterprise-grade firewalls, high-speed Ethernet switches, routers, WAN, and wireless environments using:
- Aruba for wireless
- Cisco and Arista for Ethernet networking (LAN, MAN, WAN)
- Cisco ACI for data center networking
- Palo Alto firewall solutions
- Citrix ADC for reverse proxy
- Fiber optic networking solutions (SM/MM).
Desirable:
- Proven experience in applying cybersecurity principles to design and implement enterprise and research networks.
- Cisco certifications in Ethernet Wireless, Routing, and Switching.
- Ability to provide technical guidance to team members, management, and clients.
- Experience leading the design and deployment of large-scale infrastructure solutions.
- Skilled in using scripting and automation for problem-solving in enterprise networking.
- Innovative mindset, contributing ideas and approaches for scientific investigations.
- Competence in writing technical/non-technical documentation and project proposals.
