The Opportunity

The SKA Observatory (SKAO) is a next-generation radio astronomy facility that will revolutionise our understanding of the Universe and the laws of fundamental physics. Enabled by cutting-edge technology, it promises to have a major impact on society, in science and beyond.

In Australia, the SKAO is collaborating with CSIRO to operate and support the construction of the low frequency telescope (SKA-Low) in remote Western Australia on Wajarri Yamaji Country.

The Traditional Owners and native title holders, the Wajarri Yamaji, have gifted CSIRO with the traditional name Inyarrimanha Ilgari Bundara for the CSIRO Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory, home to the SKA-Low telescope. The traditional name means ‘sharing sky and stars’ in the Wajarri language.

The SKA-Low DevOps Engineer will be part of the new SKA Low Site Reliability Engineering team responsible for establishing and maintaining the Continuous Integration and Delivery pipeline to support the SKA-Low computing and software system that will have to last, and be continually developed, for decades. Enabling flow in delivering working software, systems and services to the telescopes, from version control to automated deployment in a highly regulated environment, at scale. 

They will work alongside key stakeholders within the SKAO community to support the long-term continuous integration and delivery of operationally secure, highly available, and sustainable computing and software systems. This role will report directly to the SKA-Low Site Reliability Engineering Manager.

Your duties will include:

• Work with SKAO stakeholders to continually refine the requirements of the Continuous Integration and Delivery pipelines for the SKA software system.
• Work with the SKAO SAFe® Platform and System teams to support and help agile development teams in adopting DevOps practices as defined.
• Automate processes and procedures to continuously improve how software is deployed. 
• Assist and enable the software release management process including configuration management.
• Assist with documenting relevant processes, procedures and tools to support the Continuous Integration and Delivery ecosystem.
• Contribute to the maintenance of a containerised infrastructure for software development, testing and deployment.

Salary:         AU$89,680 - AU$101,459 plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

 Essential

• A tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent work experience.
• Experience in using and implementing DevOps principles, practices and/or Continuous Integration tools (Jenkins, GoCD, Gitlab, Travis-CI).
• Experience with scripting and/or programming languages, preferably Python.
• Experience in automation of testing, verification and deployment of software.

Desirable

• Experience in using infrastructure provisioning tools (such as Docker, Helm, Ansible, Terraform) in a cloud environment or in a virtualized environment.
• Experienced in administering application servers, web servers and databases.
• Knowledge of integrated security practices such as secrets management into the DevOps pipelines, SSO, platform and application hardening.
• Demonstrated understanding and enthusiasm for working based on lean/agile principles.
