About NEAC

The National Energy Analysis Centre (NEAC) is CSIRO-led, next-generation digital research infrastructure that will drive and inform Australia's energy transition to net zero. NEAC offers a systems-science approach, combining technical data with human behaviour insights to support faster, smarter energy innovation. It connects real people, physical test facilities, and sophisticated modelling to support researchers, innovators, and policymakers in shaping the energy landscape of the future.

NEAC includes:

  • The Living Lab – a real-world data network of homes, businesses and energy users
  • The Systems Science Toolbox – a comprehensive model suite for Australia's entire energy system
  • Physical Infrastructure Integration – connections to CSIRO facilities for testing and simulation

The opportunity

Are you passionate about systems thinking and solving complex engineering problems? Join the National Energy Analysis Centre (NEAC) as a Systems Engineering Specialist, where you will play a key role in developing and applying Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) to support Australia’s energy transition.

In this role, you will work with a cross-disciplinary team to build MBSE capabilities and applications that deliver meaningful value to government, industry, and communities. You will translate stakeholder needs into formal models, develop analytical workflows, and contribute to NEAC’s capability roadmap, helping to shape the future of energy systems in Australia.

If you’re ready to bring your systems engineering expertise to a collaborative, purpose-driven team, we’d love to hear from you.

Your high-level duties will include:

  • Translating stakeholder perspectives into formal SysML requirements.
  • Developing SysML models aligned with NEAC’s reference architecture.
  • Creating scientific computing software for analytical workflows.
  • Collaborating with NEAC leadership and technical teams to deliver on strategic priorities.
  • Coaching colleagues in systems engineering practices and engaging with the wider community.
  • Upholding CSIRO’s values and commitment to safety, diversity, and sustainability.

Role particulars

  • Location and office arrangements: Newcastle, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, or Canberra preferred. Other east coast locations with a CSIRO presence may be considered.

  • Tenure & work schedule: Full time;  Specified term until 31 December 2028. Options for part-time, job-share and flexible work arrangements can be discussed based on the needs of the role and individual circumstances.
  • Reference: 101755

As the successful candidate, you will bring:

Essential

  • A degree in Systems Engineering or a related field, with 5+ years of industry or research experience.
  • Deep understanding of MBSE and systems architecture using SysML.
  • Strong computational skills in scientific computing languages (e.g., Python, Julia, R, MATLAB).
  • Experience modelling and solving constrained optimisation problems in scientific computing environments.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills in a dynamic, agile team.

Desirable

  • Experience with SysML modelling tools (e.g., CATIA, IBM Rhapsody).
  • Familiarity with Git and team-based software development.
  • Experience in data analytics with large or complex datasets.
  • Understanding of supply chains and/or energy systems.
