We are seeking a motivated HSE Advisor to join our Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) team. Our team partners with all levels of the organisation to drive safer research and operational outcomes. We are a future-focussed team that delivers innovative HSE programs to improve CSIRO's HSE culture. 

This role reports to the Senior HSE Advisor (Region Lead – ACT/NSW) and supports the delivery of consistent HSE outcomes across multiple sites. As the HSE Advisor, you will provide practical guidance, training, and support to staff, leaders, and stakeholders, helping to implement policies, improve safety performance, and foster a proactive culture of personal accountability. 

You will contribute to and lead strategic HSE initiatives, and work collaboratively to drive continual safety improvements. You’ll have opportunities to develop professionally, gain project experience, and contribute to shaping HSE programs at CSIRO — preparing you to step into higher-level responsibilities in the future.

Your duties will include:

  • Supporting the implementation of CSIRO’s HSE Plan by coordinating your local Site presence, ensuring consistency across CSIRO sites in the allocated region.
  • Building strong relationships with site work groups, understanding their unique HSE needs, and providing recommendations to guide management decisions.
  • Contributing to a positive cohesive, collaborative and innovative HSE team.
  • Coaching and educating staff by sharing knowledge across relevant teams.
  • Promoting and embodying the HSE culture by leading by example, encouraging positive behaviours that foster a proactive HSE culture.
  • Supporting effective consultation through the practical application of the organisations systems and WHS Legislation.

Location: Newcastle (Travel between sites in NSW/ACT region, as required)

Salary: AU$96k - AU$109k pa plus 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

  • Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety, or equivalent relevant experience in HSE, Risk Management, or related fields.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with HSE staff and key stakeholders to foster a positive safety culture and build strong relationships, with a capacity to adapt to a dynamic environment to achieve team objectives.
  • Proven experience in understanding stakeholder priorities and working with HSE teams to design, deliver, and implement effective communication strategies (both written and verbal, such as training) to ensure consistent messaging across the organisation.
  • Experience in facilitating knowledge transfer within HSE teams and across stakeholders, while providing support, guidance, and coaching to colleagues, encouraging positive communication and collaboration.
  • Experience in the operational application of WHS Legislation, as well as other relevant information, to proactively identify potential issues and respond appropriately.
  •  A current Australian Drivers Licence, as some driving between sites will be required.
