The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) is Australia’s national scientific research agency. CSIRO’s sensory, flavour and consumer science expertise is unique in that it integrates flavour science, objective sensory science, and consumer acceptance & food choices. Our CSIRO ‘Food’ Program is continuously working towards improving food supply in Australia and around the world.

 

We are currently recruiting for approximately 10 casual positions where successful candidates will be part of a team that tastes, describes and evaluates the appearance, aroma, flavour and texture of different types of foods, beverages or prototypes. Successful candidates will be trained in evaluating products following strict scientific protocols.

 

Panellists will be required for a maximum of two (2) hours per day and will work on a project basis, with projects typically having a duration of 1-2 weeks. Work is on an ad-hoc basis – therefore, we do not guarantee work every day or every week. All tastings will be undertaken at the CSIRO laboratories in Werribee, VIC. As such, we prefer that candidates should be within commuting distance of this site and willing to be available at relatively short notice (i.e. 1-2 days in advance).

Your duties will include:

  • Participating as an individual and/or as part of a team to describe and evaluate the appearance, aroma, flavour and texture of different types of foods, beverages or prototypes (following scientific protocols).
  • Communicating effectively and respectfully with CSIRO staff and fellow panel members.
  • Always arriving punctually for testing sessions.
  • Providing advance notice (as early as possible) of expected periods of unavailability.
  • Adhering to the spirit and practice of CSIRO’s Code of Conduct, Health, Safety and Environment procedures and policy, Diversity initiatives and Zero Harm goals.

 

Location: Werribee, VIC

Salary: AU$30.68/hour plus casual loading and superannuation

Tenure: 12-month Casual appointments – up to 2 hours per day and on an ‘as-needed’ basis (please note panellists will not be required every day or every week)

To be considered you will need:

  • To be available from 10:00am to 2:30pm on most weekdays.
  • Have a passion for food and science.
  • Willingness to taste a wide range of foods and beverages within a laboratory setting.
  • Have no known food allergies, food intolerances or chronic metabolic diseases.
  • Have good communication & interpersonal skills.
  • Have good sensory abilities.

Eligibility

Applications for this position are open to Australian Citizens, New Zealand Citizens, Australian Permanent Residents, and Australian Temporary Residents, currently residing in Australia. Appointment to this role is subject to provision of a national police check and may be subject to other security/medical/character requirements.
