The opportunity
The ICT Systems Engineer (seagoing) supports scientific voyages on the RV Investigator, contributing to world-class blue-water research. These roles sit within the Data Acquisition and Processing Team, providing ICT systems and software engineering, network administration, data processing, and data management support for the Marine National Facility (MNF).
The RV Investigator operates a sophisticated ICT network supporting vessel operations and scientific instrumentation. The role requires up to 85 seagoing days per year (voyages typically 3–8 weeks), overseeing data acquisition systems, network administration, data quality monitoring, computing support, and scientific collaboration.
Based at CSIRO’s Hobart Laboratories, the role also involves maintaining and improving the ship’s ICT infrastructure, integrating new components, and delivering quality-controlled MNF data products via the CSIRO Information & Data Centre. On-the-job training and mentoring in CSIRO-specific systems and seagoing responsibilities will be provided.
Your duties will include:
- Operate data acquisition systems, maintain data quality, provide ICT support, and manage the vessel’s network during MNF research voyages.
- Diagnose and resolve hardware, software, and network issues, working alongside electronic and computing support staff.
- Maintain and improve shipboard infrastructure, including networking, satellite, PABX, CCTV, and backup systems.
- Integrate, develop, and maintain systems for ICT services, marine data acquisition, processing, and visualization.
- Document systems for both support staff and end users, monitor hardware performance, and contribute to upgrade discussions.
- Assist researchers with data processing, quality control, and visualization while ensuring user needs are met with proactive issue resolution.
- Work within multidisciplinary teams, follow CSIRO’s Code of Conduct, safety policies, and diversity initiatives.
- Identify and drive system improvements, manage services for large user groups, and collaborate with industry partners.
