Funded by the Australian Government since 1984, the Marine National Facility (MNF) provides a keystone element of the nation’s research infrastructure as the only blue-water research capability available in Australia. The 94m research vessel, Investigator was commissioned in 2014-15 and is available for multidisciplinary research in the oceans and seas around Australia, from the tropics to the Antarctic ice-edge. The RV Investigator has a sophisticated ICT network used to support the operation of the vessel and to collect data from the vessel’s array of scientific instrumentation.

We are currently offering opportunities for two ICT Systems Engineers to enable and support scientific voyages on the RV Investigator. Based in Hobart, the positions are offered across two salary levels and will form part of the Data Acquisition and Processing team. As the successful candidate for one of these key roles, you will provide support for ICT systems and software engineering, network administration, satellite communications, data processing and data management. 

Whilst at sea, you will be responsible for running various data acquisition systems, monitoring the data quality, administration of the ICT network, providing general computing support, and supporting scientists to achieve their objectives. Onshore, you will maintain, support, and improve the ship’s ICT infrastructure systems, contribute to ongoing software development projects, and complete data processing tasks to deliver quality controlled MNF data products.

A requirement of the role is to provide up to 85 days per year of seagoing support on voyages that are typically 3 to 8 weeks in duration. Extensive on-the-job training and mentoring is provided for on-board systems, and the seagoing aspect of the role.

In this role you will:

• Undertake the role of computing support person on MNF research voyages.
• Contribute to the diagnosis and rectification of hardware and software issues.
• Maintain and evolve shipboard network, communication and computing infrastructure.
• Integrate, develop, and maintain software and hardware systems.
• Document existing and new systems to a high level, for both support staff and end users.
• Monitor hardware performance and provide input into discussions on equipment upgrades/replacement.
• Liaise with scientists and assist with the processing, quality control and visualisation of data acquired by the MNF research vessel. 
• Liaise with clients to determine their needs and correct problems promptly and in a constructive manner.

For appointment at the CSOF4 level, you will:
 

• Identify and take ownership of opportunities for improvements in systems and procedures and resolve complex problems.  
• Manage a facility or service supporting a large number of users (as required).
• Collaborate effectively with other teams and industry colleagues to achieve objectives.

Salary:            CSOF3:   $68k to AU$86k per annum, plus up to 15.4% superannuation
                                 or
                       CSOF4:   $89k - $101k per annum, plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

• A tertiary qualification in Information Technology and/or equivalent relevant experience.
• Computing infrastructure skills (see ‘Position Details’ link below)
• Basic software development skills.
• Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communications skills.
• The ability to work collaboratively and interact effectively, sometimes from remote locations.
• A strong customer-centric support ethic with the ability to provide a high level of technical support at sea for the duration of voyages (up to 85 days per year, typically 3 to 8 weeks in duration).

For an appointment at the CSOF4 salary level, you must also have:
 

• Experience specifying, procuring, and integrating ICT infrastructure systems and components.
• The ability to develop and meet goals, working with stakeholders under limited direction to mutually agreed outcomes and specific deadlines.
• The ability to identify, own and resolve complex problems, taking ownership through to successful completion.
