CSIRO tries to understand Australia's variable and changing climate and how it will allows industries and communities to increase their resilience, prepare and respond, particularly in relation to natural disasters and it provides information about the health of the atmosphere. CSIRO’s Oceans and Atmosphere business unit provides the large-scale multidisciplinary science to inform the use of Australia's marine environment. We develop tools for decision-making in coastal regions and provide scientific support to authorities and industries responsible for the sustainable management and use of Australian and international fisheries.

 

CSIRO is developing numerous Biogeochemical models, from simple oceanic NPZD to the more complex multi-nutrient multi-planktonic size class and benthic component coastal model. Joining our wider Oceans research group, as a Biogeochemical Modeller, you will be responsible for configuring these biogeochemical models in a wide range of projects centred around climate and carbon cycle.

 

You’ll be actively involved in our existing national collaborations like, COSIMA-2 (Consortium for Ocean-Sea Ice Modelling in Australia), ACCESS-NRI (The Australian Community Climate and Earth-System Simulator weather models), and apply your expertise to build on current models, as well as lead the future development and application of marine biogeochemical models, to enhance our research capabilities.

Your duties will include:

  • Using the knowledge and understanding of ocean chemistry, biology and physics to develop and apply biogeochemical models.
  • Collaboratively working with teams of scientists to utilise the unique and novel observations collected by CSIRO and deliver new insights into marine biogeochemical processes.
  • Undertaking high-quality research of international standing and communicating and publishing that research in reputed forums.
  • Proactively contributing to CSIRO’s engagement in collaborative ventures such as the Australian Antarctic Program Partnership, the Integrated Marine Observing System, and the OceanSITES global network of time series observations.
  • Ensuring that the project milestones are met on time, within the budgets and as per the research plans.

Salary: AU$102K – AU$111K pa + up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

  • A PhD, or an equivalent combination of qualifications and research experience, in a relevant field, such as marine biogeochemistry or ocean modelling.
  • Demonstrated ability to configure and apply marine biogeochemical models in 3D ocean circulation models.
  • Experience in the development and/or interpretation of numerical models of the ocean and the analysis of large and complex models and observation data sets.
  • Experience effectively using High-Performance Computing (HPC) facilities and technologies.
  • Demonstrated success in publishing innovative and high impact results that advance our understanding of marine biogeochemical processes.
  • Experience working in a multi-disciplinary team to collaboratively tackle challenging research problems.

Eligibility
