The opportunity

The SKA Observatory (SKAO) is a next-generation radio astronomy facility that will revolutionise our understanding of the Universe and the laws of fundamental physics. Enabled by cutting-edge technology, it promises to have a major impact on society, in science and beyond.

In Australia, the SKAO is collaborating with CSIRO to operate and support the construction of the low frequency telescope (SKA-Low) in remote Western Australia on Wajarri Yamaji Country.

The Traditional Owners and native title holders, the Wajarri Yamaji, have gifted CSIRO with the traditional name Inyarrimanha Ilgari Bundara for the CSIRO Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory, home to the SKA-Low telescope. The traditional name means ‘sharing sky and stars’ in the Wajarri language.

The Network and Computing Technician will support all related installation, configuration, maintenance and support activities for the SKA-Low Telescope computing and network infrastructure in Geraldton and at the Telescope site.

This role will require a willingness and ability to travel to the remote telescope site, interstate and internationally as required, noting we work hard to accommodate personal arrangements.

Your duties will include:

  • Assist in the deployment, configuration, and support of computing and software platforms and networking infrastructure for the SKA-Low Telescope at the Engineering Operations Centre (EOC) and at the SKA Low Telescope Construction site.

  • Provide technical support for the wider Information and Communications Technology (ICT) services including performing incident response and supporting communications, network, and presentation technologies.

  • Support the installation and verification of the networking and computing infrastructure.

  • Work with, and support, IT and Networking team members to identify and define hardware, software, and system level issues in the network and computing infrastructure.

  • Support and maintain asset and configuration management records for the installations.
