The opportunity

The SKA Observatory (SKAO) is a next-generation radio astronomy facility that will revolutionise our understanding of the Universe and the laws of fundamental physics. Enabled by cutting-edge technology, it promises to have a major impact on society, in science and beyond.

 

In Australia, the SKAO is collaborating with CSIRO to operate and support the construction of the low frequency telescope (SKA-Low) in remote Western Australia on Wajarri Yamaji Country.

 

The Traditional Owners and native title holders, the Wajarri Yamaji, have gifted CSIRO with the traditional name Inyarrimanha Ilgari Bundara for the CSIRO Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory, home to the SKA-Low telescope. The traditional name means ‘sharing sky and stars’ in the Wajarri language.

 

The SKA-Low Licensed Electrician will form part of the SKA-Low Engineering Operations team based at our Engineering Operations Centre in Geraldton, Western Australia. They will assist the SKA-Low Electrician and broader telescope maintenance team with both scheduled and unscheduled electrical maintenance activities on the SKA-Low Telescope and its associated infrastructure.

Your duties will include:

 

  • Undertake installation, commissioning, maintenance, and equipment upgrades across a range of industrial electrical and electronic systems.

  • Actively contribute to written and online documentation associated with equipment repair and maintenance, including management of system drawings and schematics, and configuration management.

  • Carry out regular safety inspections and effect prompt repairs of all electrical equipment.

  • Assist in a range of site activities and interact and cooperate with other technical and non-technical staff to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the observatory systems.

  • Participate in the after-hours on-call system, attend to after-hours breakdowns, and work flexible hours as required.

Salary:         AU$93,267 - AU$105,517 plus 15.4% superannuation

Tenure:        Indefinite – Full-Time, Part-Time or Job-Share

To be considered you will need:

Essential

  • Relevant trade qualification for an Electrician and an unrestricted WA Electrical Licence, or an ability to obtain before commencement.

  • Practical knowledge in the design, upgrade, and installation of switchboards and electrical distribution systems to meet Australian electrical standards.

  • Demonstrated experience planning and conducting the commissioning, maintenance, repairs, fault finding and diagnosis of electrical systems, including interpretation of drawings.

  • Demonstrated ability to work safely and effectively as part of a small engineering team with minimal supervision and display a high level of initiative and self-motivation.

  • Demonstrated experience using industry relevant software systems i.e., Electrical diagnostic software, SCADA, SAP, Maximo, CITEC, PLC software or similar.

  • Good written and verbal communication skills and proven ability to utilise computer software packages for general correspondence and documentation updates.

 

Desirable

  • Experience working in remote locations.

  • Experience in maintenance and repair of HVAC systems.

  • Experience in High Voltage Switching Operations.

  • Relevant additional High Risk Work Licences.

  • WA Heavy Rigid Licence.
