The opportunity 

As the IIS Platforms Facilities Manager, you will lead the operation, security and continuous improvement of CSIRO's critical data centre infrastructure. This senior leadership role is responsible for the strategic direction, operational excellence and future capability of CSIRO's data centre facilities, including power, cooling, cabling, security and environmental systems.

You will lead a multidisciplinary team, manage complex infrastructure projects and vendor partnerships, ensuring critical facilities remain safe, reliable, secure and fit for future technology needs. The ideal candidate will combine strong people leadership with deep experience in critical infrastructure, facilities operations or technology environments, and a proven ability to drive service improvements, operational resilience and strategic outcomes.

High-level duties include

• Provide strategic and technical leadership for CSIRO's data centre and facilities operations, developing and communicating the vision, roadmap, standards and operational frameworks required to support current and future organisational needs.
• Evaluate emerging technologies, industry trends and best practices to drive innovation, improve reliability, optimise energy efficiency and support long-term infrastructure planning and investment.
• Align data centre and facilities operations with organisational objectives, IMT strategy, capacity planning requirements and business priorities.
• Lead, mentor and develop a high-performing team of Facilities and Data Centre Operations Specialists, fostering a culture of safety, technical excellence, accountability, collaboration and continuous improvement.
• Allocate resources effectively across operational support, project delivery, maintenance activities and capability uplift initiatives.
• Conduct workforce planning, recruitment, performance management, career development and capability planning activities.
• Ensure the efficient, reliable and secure operation of data centre and associated facilities infrastructure, maintaining high levels of service availability, operational performance and customer satisfaction.
• Develop, implement and maintain operational policies, procedures, standards and documentation to support consistent facilities and data centre operations.
• Monitor infrastructure performance, capacity, utilisation and availability, implementing proactive measures to address issues and support future growth requirements.
• Oversee maintenance, upgrades, lifecycle management and continuous improvement activities for data centre infrastructure, including power, cooling, structured cabling, environmental monitoring, physical security and associated facilities systems.
• Ensure Data Centre Infrastructure Management (DCIM) platforms and monitoring systems are effectively configured, maintained and utilised to support proactive management, reporting and decision-making.
• Coordinate the planning and delivery of infrastructure projects, maintenance works and service improvement initiatives, ensuring objectives, budgets, schedules and quality standards are achieved.
• Lead incident response, problem resolution and emergency management activities to minimise operational disruption and ensure timely restoration of services.

Location and office arrangements: Canberra (Black Mountain), Melbourne (Clayton) – Preferred, other Major Australian capital cities considered.

Salary: AU$135,571 – AU$158,863 per annum (pro rata for part-time), plus 15.4% superannuation

As the successful candidate, you will bring:

 Essential criteria

• A degree in engineering, information technology, facilities management, or a related discipline (or equivalent demonstrated experience), together with substantial experience in senior leadership roles responsible for data centre facilities, critical infrastructure, operational technology, or information management and technology services.
• Certified Data Centre Professional (CDCP) or a related discipline (or equivalent demonstrated experience).
• Demonstrated experience leading large-scale, complex and customer-focused technology infrastructure or facilities operations, including the development of strategic roadmaps, operational plans, service improvements and capability uplift initiatives that align with organisational objectives and technology strategies.
• Proven ability to lead, develop and motivate high-performing multidisciplinary teams, including workforce planning, performance management, succession planning, capability development and fostering a culture of safety, accountability, technical excellence and continuous improvement.
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the management of critical infrastructure environments, including power, cooling, environmental monitoring, physical security, structured cabling, business continuity and disaster recovery.
• Proven ability to manage operational risk, compliance and governance requirements, including Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) obligations.
• A strong track record in leading complex infrastructure projects, operational change programs, technology upgrades and service improvement initiatives, including planning, resource allocation, vendor coordination, transition to operations and the management of incident and change processes.
• Proven ability to build and maintain effective relationships with executives, business leaders, technical teams, external suppliers and service providers.
• Demonstrated experience managing budgets, contracts, service levels and vendor performance to achieve organisational outcomes.
• Highly developed communication, influencing and problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts for diverse audiences, make evidence-based decisions, resolve competing priorities and provide strategic advice to senior stakeholders.

Desirable

• Track record as a leader in digital and information technology delivery in a research organisation.
• Qualifications or experience in electrical or mechanical engineering.
• WHS, critical infrastructure, facilities management or leadership certifications.
• Experience with Data Centre Infrastructure Management (DCIM) platforms, environmental monitoring systems and energy efficiency optimisation.
