The opportunity 

As a Virtualisation Engineer, you will play a key role in the operation, security, automation and continuous improvement of CSIRO’s virtualisation and private cloud platforms. Joining CSIRO’s Information and Infrastructure Services (IIS) team, you will help deliver the cloud, compute, storage and virtualisation platforms that underpin the organisation’s research and business operations. Working with technologies including VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF), VMware vSphere and associated infrastructure services, you will deliver reliable, secure and scalable infrastructure that supports critical research, enterprise and scientific workloads.

Working across a diverse technology environment, you will collaborate with colleagues and stakeholders to support innovation and enable world-class science through modern, high-performing technology solutions.

This role contributes to the design, implementation and lifecycle management of virtualisation services while driving automation, platform modernisation and operational excellence to achieve positive customer outcomes.

High-level duties include: 

• Maintain and support VMware vSphere, VCF, and related virtual infrastructure.
• Resolve incidents, service requests, and operational issues.
• Troubleshoot and remediate platform performance and availability.
• Participate in on-call and major incident support.
• Manage and maintain Cisco UCS infrastructure, including Fabric Interconnects, servers, service profiles, and networking.
• Administer the Cisco Intersight environment to monitor health, compliance, and inventory.
• Perform firmware upgrades, hardware lifecycle management, and coordinate vendor support.

Salary: AU$100,103 – AU$113,251 per annum, plus 15.4% superannuation

As the successful candidate, you will bring:

Essential criteria

• Tertiary qualification in Science, Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
• Demonstrated experience in Cisco UCS server hardware infrastructure management.
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the VMware virtualisation suite.
• Experience in programming, scripting, or infrastructure orchestration.
• Experience in Linux and Windows server administration.

• Demonstrated experience with VMware vSphere, VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF), and associated infrastructure services.
• Demonstrated experience administering Windows and Linux server environments.
• Demonstrated experience in infrastructure automation and scripting using tools such as PowerShell, Terraform, or JavaScript.
• Demonstrated ability to monitor, troubleshoot, and perform performance analysis across infrastructure environments.
• Demonstrated knowledge of infrastructure security, hardening practices, and risk mitigation principles.
• Demonstrated understanding of backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity concepts and practices.

• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently while effectively managing competing priorities and meeting deadlines.
• Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective stakeholder relationships, supported by strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Demonstrated commitment to collaboration, continuous improvement, and knowledge sharing.
• Demonstrated customer-focused approach to service delivery, with a commitment to delivering high-quality outcomes.
