We are currently seeking an experienced and innovative Senior Research Scientist to join our ‘Hydrogen and Gasification Innovations’ team within CSIRO Energy business unit!

As Australia's national science agency, CSIRO is delivering science and technology to enable Australia's energy transition towards net-zero emissions, and we are pioneering in low-emission technologies that create value for industry & households, and provide the research that will inform decision makers and help guide Australia towards a smart, secure energy future. 

In this diverse role, you will be based at the Queensland Centre for Advanced Technologies (QCAT), as a key member of our CSIRO ‘Low Emissions Technologies’ Program. You will bring your valuable research expertise to develop, deliver and expand a range of applied research projects, that have a focus on gasification and thermochemical processing to produce hydrogen and low emissions energy applications including gas-to-products/liquid fuels. You will also have a vital strategic role in applying your well-developed stakeholder engagement skills and networks to grow CSIRO’s capabilities in the area.

Your duties will include:

  • Developing, designing, and delivering client-focussed research projects, or components of large-scale research initiatives.
  • Working as part of the wider research group on key experimental or modelling aspects of research projects.
  • Anticipating industry and/or community needs and market direction through client liaison/networking, and identifying & adapting quickly to changes to ensure that CSIRO research priorities are aligned with industrial needs.
  • Using professional expertise, knowledge of other disciplines and research experience/achievement to formulate, develop and complete an approved research program.
  • Communicating research results to clients and the scientific community through oral & written reports, and scientific papers.
  • Undertaking feasibility studies, demonstrating a considerable degree of originality, creativity and innovation in solving problems and introducing new directions and approaches.


Location: Brisbane (Pullenvale), QLD

Salary: AU$121K – AU$142K pa + up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

  • Relevant PhD degree, or equivalent combination of qualifications and relevant work experience, in Chemical Engineering, Industrial Chemistry, or similar areas.
  • Established reputation, network and experience in relevant fields associated with chemical processing and energy technologies.
  • A track record of securing funding with industry and/or government bodies to develop and deliver client-focussed research projects, with demonstrated project management skills.
  • A demonstrated track record of scientific or technical impact in the bioenergy (thermal & chemical conversion), hydrogen, or related industry sectors.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the following:
    • Identification and implementation of relevant and rigorous safety protocols associated with design, development, and operation of complex research facilities.
    • Effective risk management processes and procedures across all areas of workplace operations.
  • A sound understanding of the fundamental aspects of combustion, gasification and/or pyrolysis of solid feedstocks and related industrial chemical processes.
  • Demonstrated publication history of authorship and experience in development and presentation of strategic and technical proposals, project reports, conference papers and presentations for a range of relevant industry, research, and community stakeholders.

  • Australian Citizen or Australian Permanent Resident;
  • New Zealand Citizen who usually reside in Australia; or
  • Australian Temporary Resident, currently residing in Australia, with an existing valid visa and unrestricted work rights to cover the full duration of the specified term (until January 2026), and no requirement for visa sponsorship from CSIRO.

Appointment to this role is subject to provision of a national police check and may be subject to other security/medical/character requirements.
