The Opportunity
Research Projects staff at CSIRO collaborate in scientific and technological activities, assisting with planning, experiments, observations, and technology development.
CSIRO Robotics, part of the Cyber-Physical Systems at Data61, is a globally recognized leader in robotics and autonomous systems. Based in Brisbane, we conduct research across agriculture, manufacturing, mining, biodiversity, and biosecurity, delivering scientific, social, and economic benefits through cutting-edge technology.
As part of the Advanced Mechatronic Systems Team, the successful candidate will be based at CSIRO QCAT, contributing to research and external projects in the Robotic Design and Interaction Group. They will prototype and develop electronic systems, software, and firmware, while also supporting mechatronic solutions and experimental projects.
This role includes responsibility for CAD and 3D printing, managing FDM, Resin, and Poly Jet printers, and providing technical and maintenance support. CSIRO offers training in specialist equipment to support professional development.
Your duties will include:
- Provide robotics-focused mechatronic engineering support for CSIRO’s commercial and research projects.
- Design, manufacture, and assemble robotic parts and systems, including mechanical and electrical components.
- Develop, test and modify new software applications as required (C++, Python)
- Support CAD and 3D printing for rigid and soft robotics, including operating and maintaining FDM, Resin, and Poly Jet printers.
- Manage 3D print lab consumables, scheduling, and staff training on shared equipment.
- Oversee and guide less experienced staff while ensuring adherence to standard procedures and safety protocols.

Salary: AU$96,811 - AU$109,527 plus up to 15.4% superannuation

Essential
Under CSIRO policy only those who meet all essential criteria can be appointed.
- Relevant bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant work experience in an appropriate field of Engineering
- Demonstrated experience in mechatronic design and fabrication
- Track record of completing relevant projects using 3D printers
Desirable
- CAD modelling and mechanical design skills
- Hands on experience with robotics
- Experience with Altium Designer or equivalents for schematic design and PCB layout
- Creation of custom firmware for sensors and actuation
- Demonstrated experience in collaborating with external clients
