The Position

This role sits within the Business Processes and Legal Informatics team.  As an integral part of the team the incumbent of this position will apply their strong programming skills to contribute to the research objectives of the team and the development of software and systems targeting applications in the legal domain based on Data61’s research in Computational Law.

You will work with a high level of independence to design, develop and adapt functional programming techniques. You will participate in project scoping and planning, and make significant contributions to the research direction of a world-class research team.  You will set up and maintain efficient work teams, manage performance and resources; and provide leadership and development to less experienced staff to ensure research outcomes are achieved.

Location:    Dutton Park, QLD
Salary:        AU $95K - AU $103K plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Tenure:       3 year term, 3 positions available

To be successful you will need:

  • A Bachelors/Masters/PhD Degree in a relevant discipline, such as computer science or engineering and/or equivalent experience.
  • Excellent understanding of algorithms and data structures. 
  • Strong demonstrable skills in modern programming techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a high degree of independence, plan and set work for self and others and recognise where endeavours will make the most impact.
  • Demonstrated experience with revision control systems, such as git or mercurial.
  • A thorough understanding and commitment to principles of open-source software.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed research team, and carry out tasks autonomously in support of scientific research.
  • Demonstrated ability & willingness to contribute novel ideas and approaches in support of scientific investigations.

It is desirable that you have experience with the following:

  • Java (or C/C++), JavaScript with NodeJS or similar 

  • FP: Haskell and/or Scala 

  • AWS, or other cloud

  • Linux, provisioning
