The Position

The Adaptive Communities & Industries Group seeks an economic geographer, or spatial economist, to join our Resources and Communities Team. We seek an enthusiastic researcher who is highly familiar with the economic and social challenges and opportunities faced by rural communities.

The successful candidate will bring a high level of motivation, quantitative skills and experience with sustainable regional development. The position includes desktop analysis, fieldwork, stakeholder interaction and communication of findings to inform policy and research communities. The successful applicant will make a substantial contribution to a number of research projects in rural Australia focused on regional economic development and will be expected to contribute to the Group’s science profile and research agenda.


Location:      Brisbane, QLD

Salary:          $92K - $100K plus up to 15.4% superannuation

Tenure:        Specified term of 2 years

To be successful you will need:

  • A doctorate and or equivalent research experience in a relevant discipline area, such as economics, economic geography, spatial economics, and/or regional economics.
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting economic research and analysis at a variety of scales in regions and communities in Australia.
  • Expertise in quantitative analysis including econometrics and familiarity with relevant software packages such as STATA.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed research team, and carry out independent individual research, to achieve organisational goals.
  • A record of science innovation and creativity plus the ability & willingness to incorporate novel ideas and approaches into scientific investigations.
