The opportunity
CSIRO’s Research Scientists/Engineers drive innovative research aligned with strategic goals ranging from fundamental science to solving real-world industry and community challenges. In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to lead projects, shape research direction, build collaborative networks, secure funding, and develop new concepts and solutions.
This position sits within the Responsible AI Research Centre (RAIR) and the SE4AI research team, with a focus on the following:
- Research implementation Translate research concepts into experiments, prototypes, and minimal viable products across various domains. You’ll need a strong engineering background with applied AI knowledge particularly in large language models (LLMs). Contribute to responsible AI by implementing AI guardrails and safety standards.
- Project delivery Lead the development of AI-based systems, bringing engineering and tech expertise to project delivery. Experience with AI safeguards, agent systems, no/low-code platforms, or reusable component libraries is highly valued to streamline AI solution development.
Your duties will include:

Conduct and deliver innovative research projects, using expertise across disciplines to develop and complete research programs.

Plan and lead smaller projects or components of larger initiatives, including supervision of technical staff and allocation of resources.
- Build trusted relationships with clients by understanding their needs, anticipating industry trends, and adapting to evolving market directions.
- Apply creative problem-solving to feasibility studies and introduce novel approaches where appropriate.
- Communicate research outcomes through reports, publications, and, where relevant, patent documentation.
- Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams across CSIRO to support broader scientific goals.
- Uphold CSIRO’s values and commitment to safety, ethics, and diversity in all aspects of work.
Location: Adelaide, South Australia
Salary: AU$131k - AU$153k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

Essential

- Demonstrated ability to conduct original, creative, and innovative research by generating and developing novel ideas and solutions to scientific problems.
- A proven publication record, including authorship of peer-reviewed journal articles, scientific reports, grant applications, or inventorship on patent applications.
- A strong track record of leading high-impact technical initiatives and translating research into practical applications, with demonstrated success in:
- Architecting AI solutions
- Implementing responsible AI frameworks across diverse domains
- Establishing strategic partnerships and external collaborations
- Driving innovation in AI research with a clear focus on real-world outcomes
