The opportunity

CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral research experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.

This postdoctoral fellowship sits within the Regulatory Tools team in the Energy Business Unit, which maintains and develops AccuRate, the benchmark software used for the Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS). Improving the energy performance of residential buildings is critical to achieving net zero emissions by 2050. HVAC systems are central to delivering energy‑efficient, healthy and comfortable homes. In this role, you will work closely with the team to develop a robust framework for sizing HVAC systems for Australian residential buildings and implement it in AccuRate Home (the NatHERS Whole‑of‑Home benchmark tool). This work will strengthen household energy consumption estimates, support practical appliance selection, and help industry deliver more comfortable and energy‑efficient homes, contributing to CSIRO’s role in supporting the Australian Government’s 2050 emissions reduction targets.

The Opportunity

The SKA Observatory (SKAO) is a next-generation radio astronomy facility that will transform our understanding of the Universe and fundamental physics. In Australia, SKAO is partnering with CSIRO to construct and operate the SKA-Low telescope on Wajarri Yamaji Country in remote Western Australia, supported by teams in Geraldton and Perth.

The Technical Facilities Manager plays a key role in ensuring the reliable operation of the SKA-Low telescope’s specialised infrastructure across the newly constructed Central Processing Facility (CPF), Remote Processing Facilities (RPF), and Central Power Station (CPS). These facilities house the core signal‑processing, control, monitoring and support systems for SKA‑Low. They contain major equipment including the power, cooling and other infrastructure needed to run the processing systems. The role will support handover of the facilities for operational readiness and into ongoing operations.

In this role, you will lead a skilled buildings team, including electricians and HVAC Technicians while planning and overseeing maintenance across critical infrastructure including high and low voltage electrical systems, advanced cooling systems for data processing equipment, HVAC, fire detection and suppression systems, and facility assets. Working closely with contractors and in-house trades, you will coordinate and supervise maintenance activities to ensure work is delivered safely, efficiently and to the highest technical and operational standards.

Your work will directly support the performance and uptime of the infrastructure that underpins the world’s largest low-frequency radio astronomy observatory.

The opportunity

The SKA Observatory (SKAO) is a next-generation radio astronomy facility that will transform our understanding of the Universe and fundamental physics. Our Assembly, Integration and Verification (AIV) Professional Services Consultant Team is an integral part of the broader SKAO AIV team, and the team plays a critical role in ensuring the successful integration and verification of the SKA-Low Telescope, one of the world’s most ambitious radio astronomy projects. Working in a diverse, multidisciplinary environment, you will collaborate with experts across science, engineering, and project delivery.

The System Scientist will be vital part of the Assembly, Integration and Verification (AIV) Professional Services Consultant (PSC) Team, which is an integrated part of the larger SKAO AIV team. The AIV team is responsible for integrating complex digital and RF electronic systems into the SKA LOW Telescope Signal Chain and verifying the Telescope to defined System Level requirements during the construction phase of the Low Telescope. The role will include day-to-day technical and scientific leadership of AIV Team members to deliver these integration and verification activities in a dynamic environment. This involves activities like writing and running Test Cases and investigating issues with Telescope components.

The opportunity

We have a dynamic and inclusive team within the Biomedical Manufacturing program and are seeking applicants for the role of Validation Engineer for a 6-month term.

As a Validation Engineer, you will provide technical validation and engineering expertise to the Regulated Operations team within CSIRO’s Biomedical Manufacturing project, part of the National Vaccine and Therapeutics Laboratories.

Supporting GMP‑compliant manufacturing and Quality Control facilities, this role is central to resolving TGA compliance findings and ensuring systems, documentation and practices meet cGMP requirements ahead of re‑inspection.

Your duties will include:

Lead and support qualification and validation (IQ/OQ/PQ) of equipment, utilities and systems, including lifecycle documentation in line with GMP requirements.
Ensure operational compliance with GMP, EHS and internal SOPs, including authoring and maintaining documentation such as deviations, CAPAs, SOPs and change controls.
Support internal and external audits and inspections, including preparation of operational and technical information.
Provide facility, plant and equipment troubleshooting, coordinating with internal teams and external vendors to resolve issues and support preventative maintenance.
Collaborate closely with Manufacturing, Quality Assurance, Quality Control and Operations teams to support efficient and compliant facility operations.
Apply risk‑based assessments (e.g. FMEA, HAZOP) to improve operational and validation outcomes.

Location: Clayton, Melbourne (predominantly site-based role)
Salary: AU$100,103 - AU$113,251 per annum, plus 15.4% superannuation

As the successful candidate, you will bring:

Essential criteria:

Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Mechanical, Chemical, Biomedical, or related) or equivalent relevant work experience.
Demonstrated experience with operation, validation and/or management of GMP-regulated pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities, plants and equipment.
Experience with facility systems (HVAC, clean utilities, EMS etc) and Equipment Qualification/Validation.
Strong understanding of GMP, validation principles, and regulatory expectations (TGA, FDA etc).

Desirable criteria:

Experience working in regulated manufacturing environments, preferably supporting early‑phase clinical trial manufacturing, with demonstrated knowledge of GMP standards and electronic quality management systems (e.g. TrackWise, Veeva, ACE).
Demonstrated experience implementing, managing and validating operational procedures, facilities, and equipment, including Environmental Monitoring (EM) programs and Computer Systems Validation (CSV) for manufacturing and quality‑related systems.
Experience supporting regulatory compliance activities, including participation in regulatory or internal audits and the ability to present operational and technical information to auditors.
Strong problem‑solving and analytical skills, with demonstrated application of risk management tools such as FMEA and HAZOP to identify, assess and mitigate operational risk.

The CSIRO Industry PhD Scholarship (iPhD) Program is an industry-focused, applied research scholarship and training program that brings together an industry partner, the university and CSIRO.

You will undertake a co-designed research project that will develop your ability to translate research into commercial outcomes.

You will get real-world experience and access to specialised expertise, equipment and training.

Our graduates develop transferable professional skills and are well positioned to work at the cutting edge of industry focussed research.

Scholarship details

The Program includes:

admission to the university PhD program
a four-year scholarship package of approx. $47,000 per annum

a four-year Project Expense and Development package of up to $13,000 per annum
a three-month internship with your industry partner
professional development training to enhance your applied research skills
supervision by CSIRO, the industry partner and the university

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply, you must:

be an Australian citizen or permanent resident, or a New Zealand citizen
meet host university PhD admission requirements
meet university English language requirements
not have previously completed a PhD
be able to commence the program in the year of the offer
enrol as a full-time PhD student
be prepared to be located at the project location(s) that the host university has approved and, if required, comply with the host university’s external enrolment procedures

The opportunity

CSIRO is seeking an Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellow to join the Energy Flexibility Team and contribute to research in Data Centre Energy Management. In this role, you will investigate how large, flexible data centre loads influence the safe, secure and reliable operation of the electricity grid. You will develop advanced modelling capability for data centre energy demand and support grid power flow analysis to enable robust assessment of data centre impacts on grid operations. The position offers the opportunity to work within a multidisciplinary research environment, engage with industry stakeholders, and contribute to research with real-world impact.

Your high-level duties will include:

Conducting innovative, high-impact research aligned with CSIRO’s strategic priorities.
