The opportunity

The primary responsibility of the Animal Ethics Committee (AEC) is to ensure, on behalf of the institution, that all activities involving animals for scientific purposes are conducted in compliance with the Australian code for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes (the Code) and relevant government legislation.

CSIRO is seeking expressions of interest for dedicated individuals to join the AEC as a Category C member as stipulated in the Australian Code:

A Category C (Animal Welfare) is a person with demonstrable commitment to, and established experience in, furthering the welfare of animals, who is not employed by or otherwise associated with the institution, and who is not currently involved in the care and use of animals for scientific purposes. Veterinarians with specific animal welfare interest and experience may meet the requirements of this category. While not representing an animal welfare organisation, the person should, where possible, be selected on the basis of active membership of, and endorsement by, such an organisation.

Your high-level duties will include:
This category requires members who can critically review documents, actively participate in discussions, and contribute to the ethical oversight of animal use in research and teaching. Members will be expected to attend regular meetings and provide thoughtful input on applications and protocols, ensuring compliance with ethical standards and regulations. The AEC holds meetings up to 8 times per year, approximately 6 hours in duration.

As a committee member, you will receive comprehensive training, work in a supportive and friendly environment, and be eligible for the payment of a sitting fee in accordance with CSIRO policy.

To be considered you will need:

You must also be willing to commit to a two-year term of appointment, attend meetings, and undertake pre-reading.
Not be a current employee (or associated with) CSIRO,

The opportunity

Support world-class scientific voyages aboard the RV Investigator by delivering critical ICT, software engineering, and data management services. Working with a sophisticated onboard network, you’ll help enable the collection and management of scientific data, contributing to high-impact blue-water research delivered through the Marine National Facility.

This role combines seagoing and onshore responsibilities. At sea, you’ll manage data acquisition systems, maintain ICT networks, support voyage participants, and work closely with scientists to achieve research objectives. Onshore, you’ll develop and maintain applications and tools for data processing, visualisation, and management, while supporting and improving ICT infrastructure and delivering high-quality data products. Based in Hobart, the role is open to candidates from diverse ICT backgrounds, with training and mentoring provided.

A requirement of the role is to provide up to 85 days per year of seagoing support on voyages that are typically 3 to 8 weeks in duration.

Your high-level duties will include:

Develop and maintain on-premises software to gather, store and deliver real-time scientific data in a remote environment.
Deploy and maintain Windows and Linux physical and virtual servers and workstations.
Process and review marine datasets from shipboard acquisition systems, including validation, visualisation and data management.
While at sea on research voyages, operate data acquisition systems, maintain data quality, and provide general ICT support. Support and maintain the ship’s network and off-ship communication infrastructure.
In conjunction with other electronic and computing support staff, diagnose and rectify hardware, firmware and software problems with scientific data acquisition and instrumentation systems, and with the ship’s ICT network infrastructure.
Liaise with scientists and assist with the processing, quality control and visualisation of data acquired on the ship.
Communicate openly, effectively and respectfully with all staff, clients and suppliers in the interests of good business practice, collaboration and enhancement of CSIRO’s reputation.

The opportunity

The SKA Observatory (SKAO) is a next-generation radio astronomy facility that will transform our understanding of the Universe. In Australia, SKAO is partnering with CSIRO to construct and operate the SKA-Low telescope on Wajarri Yamaji Country in remote Western Australia. The Traditional Owners have gifted the name Inyarrimanha Ilgari Bundara – meaning “sharing sky and stars” in Wajarri language – to the CSIRO Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory, home to SKA-Low.

As a Field Technician in the SKA-Low Maintenance and Deployment team, you will help keep this world-leading science project online. You’ll work on installation, maintenance, and repair of RF systems, fibre optics, coaxial cables, and complex electronics. Collaborating with Field Engineers and technical partners, you may also mentor junior technicians and contribute to long-term maintenance strategies.

This role operates on a Fly-In-Fly-Out (FIFO) basis from Geraldton to the SKA-Low site in Murchison, on a “4 and 3” roster (travel is via 6 to 19-seat charter planes). While on site, you’ll stay in a well-equipped village with excellent amenities and experience the unique beauty and cultural significance of the Murchison region.

The SKA Observatory (SKAO) is a next-generation radio astronomy facility that will transform our understanding of the Universe and fundamental physics. The opportunity

We are seeking a Media Advisor to play a critical role in amplifying CSIRO’s science and impact through earned and owned media.

As the Media Advisor, you will manage CSIRO’s Media Centre and triage incoming media requests to the dedicated media line and inbox. You will help to identify storytelling opportunities, devise and deliver PR/media strategies, nurture strategic media relationships, pitch stories, and assist in effective issues management.

You’ll draw on your strong media relations experience, within public relations or journalism, to craft compelling pitches that generate coverage. Success in this role requires a strong news sense, a flair for storytelling and the use of strong visuals and a good understanding of how social and digital media intersect.

Your high-level duties will include:

Acting as the central liaison point for media outlets. At times, managing the media phone and email out of hours, and managing scheduling of the weekend/public holiday roster.
Uploading media releases to CSIRO’s website, distributing releases through Isentia and news wires as needed. Providing advice and training to Communication staff as required for uploading media release content.
Working with Communications and other stakeholders to identify story opportunities, developing and executing multi-platform media campaigns that harness the news cycle to raise CSIRO’s profile on topics of strategic significance to targeted audiences.
Supporting communication peers across research units with pitching stories to ensure the best possible outcome.
Identifying storytelling opportunities; writing and providing input into media releases, owned articles, social and digital media, videos and multimedia content, and other content as required.

Location: Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne or Canberra preferred, other locations negotiable.

Salary: AU$100k - AU$113k pa + 15.4% superannuation

As the successful candidate, you will bring:

A relevant tertiary qualification in journalism, communication or public relations or equivalent experience within large or complex organisations.
Demonstrated experience devising and delivering PR/integrated communication campaigns that have cut-through and achieve objectives with target audiences.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with well-honed abilities in pitching to media, writing media releases, sub-editing and editing for a wide range of audiences and channels.
Experience in public relations, alongside a contemporary and integrated skill set across digital and social media and stakeholder management.
Strong digital skills (including experience in publishing to websites through a Content Management System), and confidence to learn new digital platforms.
Demonstrated experience using data-driven insights to inform a success communications strategy.
An understanding of the media and stakeholder environment in which CSIRO operates, issues management experience, and a strong news sense.
Experience working in a fast-paced environment with the ability to turn around work within tight timeframes.

The opportunity

The Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex (CDSCC) supports ground-based spacecraft telecommunications as part of the international National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Deep Space Network (DSN), under contractual arrangements between NASA and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO).

Join the Operations team at CDSCC in Canberra and begin your journey alongside experienced Link Controllers and team members, learning the ropes of deep space communication. Through hands-on training and mentorship, you’ll work towards internal certification in DSN Operations and contribute directly to NASA’s space exploration missions- tracking spacecraft, supporting science, and helping unlock the secrets of our solar system and beyond.

Your high-level duties will include:

As a trainee Link Controller, you will:

Work towards completing the highest level of internal DSN Link Controller training.
Learn on the job by supporting day-to-day operations and collaborating with experienced team members.
Develop the skills needed to take on increasing responsibility as a certified controller.
Contribute to a positive and respectful team culture, aligned with CSIRO and CDSCC values and safety standards.
Support operational tasks and grow your technical understanding of DSN systems.

Once certified, you will:

Configuring and controlling equipment to meet the requirements of the tracking schedule.
Directly collaborate with projects to ensure they achieve their mission objectives.
Logging and trend analysis activities.
Monitoring of safety and operational procedures.
Support system testing, including troubleshooting, anomaly identification and formulation of solutions to any identified issues

Take part in Technical Site Monitoring (TSM) shifts, including periodic 12-hour night shifts, to oversee site operations and assist security staff—initially alongside an experienced controller until you’re ready to work independently.

Salary: AU$86,886 – AU$109,364 per annum plus 32.4% shift penalty, plus 15.4% superannuation and tracking station allowance $139.16/week (also eligible for fleet transport to & from site within a defined Canberra region)

Tenure & work schedule: Indefinite on shift roster (full-time on a 9-day fortnightly schedule)

As the successful candidate, you will bring:

Hold (or be working towards) one or more of the following:
- Year 12 Certificate
- Certificate III or higher in Electronic Engineering (or equivalent)
- Certificate IV or higher in Information Technology (or related discipline)
- DSN Operations Controller Certification (NASA training provided as part of the role)
Proven experience in advanced scripting and programming within a Linux environment, including code development, debugging and automation.
Willingness and ability to undertake shift work, including weekends, public holidays, and regular night shifts
Capacity to quickly learn and apply technical and computer-based systems knowledge
Strong problem-solving, logical thinking, and time management skills
Good verbal and written communication abilities
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Well-developed interpersonal and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively and diagnose technical issues
Current driver’s licence.

Desirable

First Aid Certificate.
Interest or skills in software development. Some team members support operations automation through scripting and software development, which may lead to additional pay increments.

The CSIRO Industry PhD Scholarship (iPhD) Program is an industry-focused, applied research scholarship and training program that brings together an industry partner, the university and CSIRO.

You will undertake a co-designed research project that will develop your ability to translate research into commercial outcomes.

You will get real-world experience and access to specialised expertise, equipment and training.

Scholarship details

The Program includes:

admission to the university PhD program
a four-year scholarship package of approx. $47,000 per annum

a four-year Project Expense and Development package of up to $13,000 per annum
